The Challenge

Context

The 2023/24 FEDRO Annual report lays out a picture of cycling safety in Switzerland:“FEDRO wants to optimise synergies around cycling so that the goal of doubling cycling performance by 2035 compared to 2021 can be achieved. In 2023, 26 cyclists died, 7 more than in the previous year (2022: 19). 733 cyclists were seriously injured in cycling accidents (2022: 769).A fall was recorded in the number of e-bike riders who lost their lives in 2023 (from 23 to 16). However, the number of people seriously injured rose by 6.3 per cent from 560 to 595. E-bike and bicycle riders were mostly involved in skidding-related and single-vehicle accidents.”

The Theme

Together with our partners, in the context of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships, we propose the following theme for the hackathon:How might we use technology to address the increase in (e)Bike accidents and encourage safe adoption of cycling in Zürich?During the kick-off event we heard from academia & practitioners from public institutions to help guide your thinking.
